Get Low

Way back in ancient history, I played on the defensive line of my high school football team. As a nose guard, it was not uncommon to face a double team. A double team is when the center and guard team up to try and block you. Back then, offensive linemen could not use their hands to hold defensive linemen like they can today, so it was shoulder pads and helmets clashing together all along the line of scrimmage. When a defensive lineman read a double team, he was taught to hold his ground and split the double team if he could. At all costs, he was to plug the hole and hold his ground. But how do you hold your ground when you are outnumbered two to one? I can still hear my line coach screaming the answer over and over again. “Get low. Low man wins. Get low.” We were taught to put our facemask in the dirt if necessary and grab the grass. Get low.

As Christian men, we must stand our ground for the Lord, for our families, and for our church. We must fill the gap. We can’t afford to get blown out of the hole. Too much is at stake. The pressure is often great. It is not always a fair fight. How do we hold our ground? You should be able to hear the writers of Scripture yelling across the centuries, “Get low! Get low.” “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer is the way that we get low. Prayer is one way we humble ourselves before the Lord and seek God’s guidance and strength. If you want to stop getting blown out by the devil, you need to get on your face before God and become a man of prayer. It won’t happen by accident. Make a commitment to the Lord. Make a prayer list that includes your family. You will be double teamed. Get low!
